Cave Diving in Bahamas

National Geographic in the Bahamas

I’m on an expedition in the Bahamas for the next month. We’re utilizing the vessel RV Tiburon  and will be offshore and out of contact. I’ll do my best to keep up the posts if I can reach a 3G network, but we’ll see. Wes Skiles is the DP for the film shoot, which will  produce a television special to be released through National Geographic Television and NOVA next summer. As a producer, I’ll be trying to keep logistics on the rails while diving as underwater grip and second camera. Wes is also shooting an article for National Geographic magazine. Dr. Kenny Broad and Brian Kakuk and I will be using our Megalodon rebreathers for some deep dives on Andros and Dive Rite Nomad sidemount gear for the rest of our work in Abaco and other sites offshore. Tom Morris and Nathan Skiles complete the diving film crew.
We have several scientists, including rebreather diver Dr. Tom Iliffe, on the project. We’ll be recovering human Lucayan Indian remains, taking deep samples of Sahara dust and speleothems that will help illustrate former sea level stands, studying ancient paleo-animals in sinks and caves and working on documentation of biological resources. The show will tell the story of the significance of Bahamian Blue Holes and we hope, will create a public interest in their protection. -- Jill Heinerth

Still Diving in Cave Country

Many people have heard about recent flooding in North Florida. Although the water height was not quite historic, some unusual phenomena have occurred. Manatee Springs (usually the last place to go under) actually began siphoning for the first time that anyone can recall. The Santa Fe and Ichetucknee Rivers are very still compared to their normal flow and the Suwannee River is moving very briskly. Despite the high waters, there are still plenty of places to dive. Ginnie Springs is still open for cave and open water diving. The cave is very low flow and the springs are deep and expanded. A local manatee has even been seen in the main spring at Ginnie. Blue Grotto and Forty Fathom Grotto are still open for regular business with good conditions. Access to these sites allowed me to complete a Megalodon rebreather class this week with Tom Pritchard, Don Bishop and Vince Ferris. Congratulations guys!  Jill Heinerth

Cave Diving Book Review from Texas, USA!

All I can say is absolutely amazing! It is a tour de force of extremely pertainent information for divers entering the Technical Diving arena as well as those (as I am prepping for a year of training to include completion of Full Cave and Rebreather) wanting simple and smart commentary on what lies before them to become safe and sane cave divers. This is an amazing book. Thank you for the autographed copy. It will be read cover to cover and treasured. You did amazing work on "The Cave" still one of my favorite flicks. Any hint of a sequel or a return to the Cave or more stories of the survivors of that adventure?

I especially liked deep and pluoralistic (sic) approach to the discussed topics- DIR and ECCR :-) .

"...Her new book "Cave Diving - Articles and Opinions" is absolutely superb reading for anyone with even a remote interest in cave diving - I thoroughly recommend it - it's a must have.

As usual the Florida Cave diving community ("they eat their own") have managed to sully the huge amount of work that she and Bill Oigarden her co-editor put into it over several years by arguing cat and dog over the cover photo. The irony is that the book has contributions from every side of the "political" divide and it would have been a wonderfully non partisan guide that should have bought the whole community together rather than reinforced petty differences. Ho hum

More than 35 contributers range from well-known cave divers (such as Hal Watts and Lamar Hires) to geologists (Jerry Murphy and Todd Kincaid), biologists (Tom Iliffe and Jill Yager), educators (Jeff Bozanic), physicians (David Sawatzky) and mental health professionals (Bill Oigarden), among numerous others.
